Silent Night, em inglês; Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, em alemão; Voici Noel, em francês; Sancta nox, placida nox, em latim. Abaixo, algumas letras dessa canção, que já foi traduzida para mais de 300 idiomas. O texto original é mostrado como escrito em 1816 por Joseph Mohr (1792-1848). Os versos 1, 6 e 2 são os usados nas traduções mais comuns. Melodia composta em 24/12/1818 por Franz Xaver Gruber (1787-1865), que até 1850 criou vários arranjos, cujas partituras podem ser vistas em diversos museus da Áustria.

A igreja original de São Nicolau em Oberndorf, onde a música foi ouvida pela primeira vez em 1818, ruiu em grande parte como conseqüência das fortes inundações provocadas pelo rio Salzach.

A Capela Noite Silenciosa foi erigida na área defronte do altar principal onde Gruber e Mohr com seu coral apresentaram pela primeira vez a melodia de seis estrofes. Em uma área mais alta de Oberndorf, outra igreja foi construída e o púlpito e altares originais da velha igreja foram levados para lá.

Cada Natal, na passagem da meia-noite, cantores se colocam diante dos mesmos altares e recriam o momento do início do século XIX em que a melodia começou a ser ouvida no mundo inteiro.
